BOTOX® Around the Eyes By Gordon Wong, OD on April 09, 2012

Though our San Diego optometrists are obviously committed to the overall health and clarity of your vision, we'd like to turn our attention to aesthetic matters for the time being. There are plenty of ways to really make your eyes look their best. Sometimes surgeries such as a facelift will be ideal for facial rejuvenation, but an injection treatment with no downtime has been gaining in popularity over the years. Of course, we're referring to BOTOX® injections. BOTOX® injections are able to reduce wrinkles without anesthetic, without lengthy recovery times, and in just a single one-hour visit.  Injections are performed by our ophthalmologist Dr. Mihir Parikh, M.D.

What are BOTOX® injections?

BOTOX® injections use a solution of purified botulinum toxin. This is safely diluted and purified for human use. When injected, patients will experience reduced wrinkles in the injection area. It's commonly used around the eye area, the mouth area, and the forehead.

How do BOTOX® injections work?

BOTOX® injections will freeze the muscles in the injection site. Doing this will cause them to contract less frequently and halt the formation of wrinkles in that area. It's a safe option to consider, and free from complications.

Will BOTOX® injections affect my vision in any way?

No, BOTOX® injections will not affect your vision. That applies to people wearing glasses and contact lenses or people who have undergone LASIK in San Diego. The injections affect the muscles around the eyes, not the eyes themselves.

How long do BOTOX® injection results last?

In general, the results of BOTOX® injections will last for up to seven months. You will notice the affect start to wear off after a few months, at which time the wrinkles will gradually reform in the injection area. Repeat treatments can be performed as needed to repeat the effects of BOTOX® injection treatment.

Are BOTOX® injections better than facial plastic surgery?

It really depends on your aesthetic goals. In many ways, BOTOX® injections are better since there is no downtime and little chance of serious complications occurring compared to surgery. Then again, facelift may be a better bet for other kinds of aesthetic issues. It's important to discuss these matters with a trained plastic surgery professional for more information.

What services do you provide related to the eye area?

We're predominantly focused on eye care needs, so we offer various kinds of eye exams and eye care services to our patients. With that in mind, we'll be more than happy to answer your questions about eye care and vision in relation to aesthetic enhancement. Don't feel shy or anything: we're here to listen and give you reliable information.
