A Closer Look at the Laser Vision Correction
Options We Co-Manage

Laser vision procedures serve different purposes for different people. Based on your anatomy, lifestyle, and goals, we may recommend one of the following options.

LASIK

Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) is the most commonly performed vision correction surgery. It involves creating a flap in the cornea and using a laser to reshape the tissue underneath, allowing light to properly focus on the retina. This results in clearer vision.

We frequently refer patients for bladeless LASIK, which uses a laser instead of a blade for flap creation. This option can improve precision and healing time. We’ll help you understand your eligibility during your consultation.

PRK

Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) is an alternative to LASIK that’s often recommended for patients with thin corneas, large pupils, or certain corneal conditions. Instead of creating a flap, the eye surgeon removes the outer layer of the cornea before reshaping the surface with the laser.

Healing takes slightly longer with PRK than with LASIK, but the results are comparable. We regularly refer patients for PRK when LASIK isn’t the safest choice.

ICLs

Implantable collamer lenses (ICLs) can be a great choice for patients who aren’t candidates for laser-based procedures, as well as those who prefer a reversible option. These lenses are surgically implanted between the natural lens and the iris to permanently correct vision without removing any tissue.

We’ll assess your prescription and eye structure to determine whether ICLs might be right for you. From there, we’ll coordinate your care with our NVISION partners.

Who’s a Good Candidate for Laser Eye Surgery?

We’ll perform a thorough eye evaluation during your consultation to determine whether laser surgery is appropriate for you. You may qualify if:

  • You’re 18 years or older (ideally 21+ and with stable vision)
  • Your prescription hasn’t significantly changed in the past year
  • You have healthy eyes and sufficient corneal thickness
  • You don’t have chronic dry eye, keratoconus, or other conditions that affect healing
  • You have realistic expectations about the procedure and results

Some patients are surprised to learn that they aren’t eligible for LASIK but may qualify for PRK or ICLs instead. Our team is here to help you explore every option available for clearer vision.

Frequently Asked Questions About Laser Eye Surgery in La Jolla, CA

Is laser eye surgery covered by insurance?

Laser surgeries are typically considered elective, which means most insurance plans won’t cover them. We’ll verify your vision benefits ahead of time and clearly explain any costs related to your care at GW Eye Associates.

Will I still need glasses afterward?

Most patients achieve 20/40 vision or better after LASIK or PRK. Some still choose to wear glasses for night driving or reading as they age.

Is laser eye surgery safe?

Eye doctors perform millions of procedures every year with very high success rates. Dry eyes, halos, and temporary vision changes are common side effects, but they typically resolve in the weeks or months after treatment.

What if I’m not a candidate for LASIK?

Don’t worry! PRK or ICLs may be better suited to your eye anatomy. We’ll explain your full range of options and help you choose what’s best.

“I love Dr Wong. He always gives thorough explanations and his recommendations are spot on. His staff is also very kind and welcoming. It’s always a great experience getting my eyes checked.”
