OptiLIGHT procedure

What Is OptiLIGHT?

OptiLIGHT by Lumenis is the first and only intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment approved by the FDA for dry eye caused by meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). Research links MGD to as many as 86 percent of dry eye cases. The small glands along your eyelids make the oily layer of your tears. When those glands become blocked or inflamed, tears evaporate too quickly and eyes feel dry, gritty, and irritated.

OptiLIGHT delivers precise pulses of light to the skin around the eyes. The treatment calms inflammation, improves gland function, and helps stabilize your tear film.

Is OptiLIGHT Right for You?

OptiLIGHT may be a good fit if drops, warm compresses, or other dry eye treatments have not brought lasting relief. It is designed for adults whose dry eye is linked to MGD. The best way to find out is a dry eye evaluation with a trusted La Jolla optometrist. Your doctor will examine your eyes, review your symptoms, and build a plan that may combine OptiLIGHT with other dry eye treatments.

OptiLIGHT FAQ

Does OptiLIGHT hurt?

Most patients find treatment comfortable. You may notice warmth or a light snapping feeling during pulses, but sessions are quick and no needles or anesthesia are involved.

How many sessions will I need?

Most patients complete about four sessions spaced a few weeks apart. Your optometrist will recommend a schedule based on how severe your dry eye is and how your eyes respond.

Is there any downtime?

No. You can return to normal activities right after each session. Your doctor may suggest sunscreen and briefly avoiding direct sun on the treated skin.
