Exploring Payment Options for LASIK By Gordon Wong, OD on May 01, 2013

San Diego LASIK PricesIf you have dreamed about ridding yourself of the hassles and inconvenience of glasses or contact lenses, then you may want to consider LASIK surgery. However, like many of our patients, you may have questions about the cost of LASIK. A lot of patients come to our San Diego optometrists with questions about LASIK costs; however, many assume that the procedure is out of their price range. At GW Eye Associates Inc - An Optometric Corporation, we provide San Diego patients with accurate information regarding LASIK costs, as well as help for those patients exploring payment options. With this information, many of our patients are pleasantly surprised to learn that not only can LASIK be affordable, but it can actually save money in the long run as the expenses of eye wear maintenance are eliminated.

What Does LASIK Cost?

For our patients in La Jolla, laser eye surgery is customized to meet each patient’s needs and desires, so it is not possible to accurately quote the cost of LASIK without a consultation with one of our doctors. However, there are average costs that can be considered. For a traditional LASIK procedure, patients should expect to pay around $1,600 per eye. At our practice we also offer IntraLase® and iLASIK™. These are all-laser techniques that allow our doctors to provide the most personalized vision correction available. These techniques cost slightly more than traditional LASIK, with the average cost being around $2,100 per eye.

At GW Eye Associates, our quotes generally include all pre and post-operative appointments. Beware of surgeons offering suspiciously discounted prices. These prices may not include all of the costs of LASIK. It is also important to choose an experienced and qualified doctor to perform LASIK surgery, as the success of the procedure is largely dependent on the doctor.

Payment Options

We understand that the average patient does not have cash to cover the cost of LASIK surgery. Our staff is happy to help patients explore payment options. As the popularity of LASIK has continued to rise, payment options have also become easier to find. Our practice does accept a number of insurance plans. However, the cost of LASIK is not typically covered by insurance so, if this is the case, patients may want to explore one of the following options:

  • Medical line of credit: Because elective medical procedures have grown in popularity in the past several years, there are many credit companies now offering loans or credit cards specifically to cover the costs of medical procedures. Be sure to shop around and consider all the details of the loan, including interest rates, monthly payments, and any additional fees.
  • Personal credit: Patients often consider personal loans or credit cards to cover the cost of LASIK. As with medical credit, these loans often have specific terms and fees that should be considered carefully.
  • Flexible spending accounts: While traditional insurance may not cover the cost of LASIK, some employers offer flexible spending accounts, or FSAs, that do. These accounts allow employees to set aside tax-free money from their paycheck to cover extra medical expenses.
